The Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) is an international financial institution, established purposely to financial support for the economies of Latin America and the Caribbean. Recentlyit carried out a large study of the marine energy potential in Chile, as the results of which the decision was made to support the development of pilot projects in the country in this area.It is assumed that the green energy will be located on the south cost.

The initiative aims to support the development of marine energy in Chile, which will greatly contribute to the country's energy security and diversification of the economy. In the context of realizing the marine projects, above all, it is planned to explore the area with the largest potential for the development of the industry. According to the IADB data, even a small amount of energy generated by marine energy sector, will have a significant impact on Chile's energy matrix.

In the framework of the Chilean projects in the marine energy, the Inter-American Development Bank has allocated $ 2.95 million. The first project will focus on the energy of the tides and the second on the wave energy. In addition to this amount, also it is planned to contribute some more $ 550,000 for technical support.

Currently, Chile imports 75% of its energy resources. Up to now, the potential of marine energy has not been disclosedin any country of Latin America, which can radically change the economic and energy component of states. Now Chile has a great opportunity to change its dependence on foreign sources of energy andreduce greenhouse gas emissions. “In fact, Chile is one of the few countries in Latin America, with impressive resources in the field of marine and solar energy”–says Christophe Tagverker, Consultant of climate change and sustainable development of the Inter-American Development Bank.

In the near future, the government of Chile will choose two companies, which will be responsible for the design, construction and operation of off-shore facilities.IADB will also provide technical support to the Government for the duration of the program. The detailed characteristics of the projects have not been disclosed.
